Bible terminology (1)

In this final terminology section, we want to look at a few more words that are sometimes misunderstood. They are mainly words used in the King James Version, but also appear in more modern translations where the translators decide to retain some traditional terms. 


Precept – a commandment, an order or charge.

Statute – A commandment, law or ordinance.

Deuteronomy 4:1-8


Sabbath – The word means “rest”; it refers to the seventh day of the Jewish week which was set apart for rest and worship.

Tongue – In addition to the physical tongue, this word is also used to mean “language” and this is how it is translated in many modern translations.

Saint – A person set apart, or holy. In the Old Testament it usually refers to Israel or to those faithful to God within the nation of Israel, some translations use “holy one(s)” instead.  In the New Testament it refers to anyone who is baptised and has dedicated themselves to following Jesus.
